Wal-Mart vs Target Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
Wal-Mart vs Target - Assignment Example Wal-Mart strives to operate under the premise of advocating for low prices while Target simply operates under the premise of focusing on style and fashion (Steverman 12). There are many brands that one can choose to shop in America, but based on their efficiency and affordability of their products, Wal-Mart and Target are the preferred brands. Most of the college students can associate with such brands because they can only afford to shop at stores that are pocket-friendly thus the reason as to why we proposed this project. However, despite the fact that both Wal-Mart and Target are known for their efficiency and affordability, customers can only be loyal to one of them. Wal-Mart and Target have over the decades grown to establish their brands in the market and as a result, both have used different techniques and strategies to propel their growth (Bickle 21). The birth of discount retailing is traced back to the year 1962, which was the first year for operation of Wal-Mart and Target. It is during this period that Sam Waltonââ¬â¢s small chain variety of stores was engulfed in competition from other discount chains. As a result, Sam traveled all over the country to study more about the new form of retail concept and based on his vision that most of the American consumers were shifting to a new form of general store he decided to put up the first ever Wal-Mart store. Together with his wife Helen, they both put in approximately 95% into the first Wal-Mart store, which was located at Rogers, Arkansas. Wal-Mart goals ever since its inception has been to provide great value as well as great customer service (Barstow 32). Waltonââ¬â¢s vision was focused on establishing the brand at all cost with an aim of improving the lives of the people. During the same year, George Dayton launched the first ever discount Target chain store in Roseville, Minnesota. The two brands henceforth set to become the largest retail chain stores in America attracting larger customer base andà giving their competitors a challenging ground.

Rh Bill & Malthusian Theory Essay Example for Free
Rh Bill Malthusian Theory Essay In 2011, we have now seven billion people living in this planet. Unfortunately, Earthââ¬â¢s estimated carrying capacity is only about eleven to twelve billion people. With such a big problem we are facing today, it is important to analyze and examine what the scholars of the past have to say of our increasing population. One of the famous population theorists of that time is Thomas Malthus. In 1798, Malthus proposes his own theory about population. According to him, human populations grow exponentially while food production grows at an arithmetic rate. Thus, if the increase in our population is not controlled properly, then the number of the people would increase faster than the food supply. He stated that if this growth rate is allowed to continue, it would lead to a food shortage. To solve this problem, he proposed three solutions. The first one is positive check. This method increases death rates due to wars, famines, disease, and natural disasters. Preventive or negative check is the other one. It lowers the birth rate which is accomplished through abortion, birth control, and celibacy. The last one is moral restraint which is refraining from marriage until the time when a person is capable of supporting a family. This two hundred-year-old theory is now happening these days. It predicted the problems of food shortage that the world is experiencing today because of the uncontrolled increase in population. Still, I cannot fully agree with Malthus because there are things that he forgot to take into consideration when he formulated this theory. One is the ability of man to increase the food production as stated by Marx. He failed to recognize manââ¬â¢s ability to use science and technology to solve these population problems like the possible developments in agricultural technology which can increases the supply of food. Maybe during that time, science is making a slow progress that he assume we cannot remedy these problems. Another one is the use of birth control as a way of reducing population. He believed that having only few kids is the only way to stop or control the increasing growth rate. Moreover, he confused the desire for sexual relationships with the desire to have children. He didnââ¬â¢t realize that a person can still engage in a sexual relationship and still donââ¬â¢t have a child with the help of contraceptives. Although Malthusââ¬â¢ theory has some loopholes, the essentials of the theory have not yet been demolished. There are some assumptions that turned out to be true. RH bill The reproductive health bill which is now a law is the most controversial bill in the Philippines for decades which date back to 1967. The bill is composed of topics which deal with issues about family planning, maternal and child health, and reproductive and sexual conditions. Its main objective is to lift the reproductive standards of Filipinos by promoting respect for life, informed choice, birth spacing and responsible parenthood which is accordance with the human rights standards. It also guarantees access to medically-safe, legal and quality reproductive health care services and relevant information. Although it has promising merits, I do not support the bill because of some of its faulty assumptions. One is the assumption that overpopulation is the cause of poverty. In truth, there is really no relationship between overpopulation and poverty but RH bill still insists that it is the cause of the worsening poverty in our country. It is true that it is one of the factors but it is never the root cause of poverty. What is the primary cause of poverty are the corruption and the bad governance of the administration. In fact, we are one of the most corrupt countries in Southeast Asia. Another assumption is that Philippines is overpopulated. In reality, there is no overpopulation in our country. It is true that our cities are densely populated but in some parts of our country, there are small numbers of people and some are still uninhabited. One more problem in the bill is the belief that contraceptives will prevent abortion and sexually transmitted diseases. We should not entrust our safety to the use of these contraceptives in the prevention of STDs because according to some studies, there is no proof that condoms, for example, is effective in preventing STDs. In the case of abortions, it did not really lessen the incidents. According to a study in Spain, a 10-year period of an increasing use of contraceptive devises had been paralleled by a significantly increasing number of abortions. Though it is already a law, I hope that it can still be corrected so that it can truly uplift the standards of living of the Filipino people and be the solution to lessen the countryââ¬â¢s underemployment and booming population.

Silas Marner :: Free Essays Online
Silas Marner Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe In the manuscript, the title read: ââ¬ËSilas Marner:/The Weaver of Raveloe/A Story/ by/George Eliotââ¬â¢. In a letter to John Blackwood, her publisher, on 28 February 1861, she asked for the words ââ¬ËA Storyââ¬â¢ to be removed. It was taken out of all printed editions. Silas Marner took five months to write. It was written between September of 1860 and March 1861. Eliot was working on Romola when she received a summons to write Silas Marner. She put Romola, which was written in installments, aside to write Silas Marner. It was written for publication. She was inspired to write Silas Marner after reading Wordsworth's poem ââ¬Å"Michael.â⬠She quotes three lines from the poem at the beginning of her novel: 'A child, more than all other gifts That earth can offer to declining man, Brings hope with it, and forward-looking thoughts.' She told her publisher, John Blackwood, in January 1861 about her idea of writing the novel. She wrote that it was ââ¬Å"a story of old-fashioned village life, which has unfolded itself from the merest millet seed of thoughtâ⬠(Modern Library). On 24 February 1861, she said, ââ¬Å"it came to me first of all, quite suddenly, as a sort of legendary tale, suggested by me recollection of having once, in early childhood, seen a linen-weaver with a bag on his back; but, as my mind dwelt on the subject, I became inclined to a more realistic treatmentâ⬠(Modern Library). George Eliotââ¬â¢s real name was Marion Evans. She changed it because she did not want people to read her novel just because they were interested in her scandalous life. She was living with G.H.Lewes at the time and had been doing so since 1854. He and Marion Evans were unable to marry. His wife, Agnes, cheated on him with his friend Thorton Hunt, by whom she bore four children along with the three she had with Lewes. Eliot wrote to her brother Isaac in May 1857, telling him about her relationship with Lewes. He did not approve and refused to speak to her ever again and told sister Chrissy to do the same. This was a hard time for Marion. In March 1859, her sister died. Married women shunned her because of her affair. In September, she and Lewes moved together into London to provide convenient home for Leweââ¬â¢s son Charles who returned home from Switzerland. In December 1860, when she was halfway done with writing Silas Marner, Eliot suffered from ill health and depression.

Brutus’ Feelings at the End of Act 4
You are Brutus at the end of Act 4. Write your thoughts. I feel somewhat guilty for the way I spoke to Cassius; but I believe he deserved it. I am overwhelmed by guilt that I stabbed Caesar and I still cannot believe that I agreed to do so. It now makes Cassius my one and only brother in this world. He was totally wrong in what he was claiming to be correct, I mean, who doesnââ¬â¢t know Cassius has an itchy palm? What I hate the most though is that he always tries to cause fights with me, especially in front of our armies!Oh, Iââ¬â¢m in great sorrow that my wife, Portia, has committed suicide. Itââ¬â¢s my entire fault. If I had told her what I was planning to do with Caesar there would have been a lower possibility that she would have killed herself. I showed her no trust and she had all rights to do so to herself; who would want a husband like me? A betrayer, a villain, a person who listened to a man who was only hungry for power. If I donââ¬â¢t reach to a conclusion wit h Cassius, our fights could go on forever. Cassius has such a huge ego that he would always deny the fact that he is wrong. However, I would always continue responding back since I know for a fact that what I say is mostly correct as I have had more experience being in a higher position than Cassius. On the other hand, I had to end the fight somewhere as Cassius wanted me to kill him, and I cannot do this to another brother without a solid reason, but also since I was furious at myself for allowing the death of Portia. Meanwhile, I consider Cassius ideas wrong once more involving the case of marching into Philippi. The best thing to do is to march immediately into Philippi to confront the enemies. If we wait, like Cassius suggested, of course we would be less tired but we would look and be hopeless since we wouldnââ¬â¢t have tried at all and Octavius with Antony will have gained more supporters, making them stronger. After all, Antony does have mind taking persuasive skills. Althou gh, on the outer surface I believe we killed Caesar for the sake of justice, deep inside I know that I shouldnââ¬â¢t have done it.I regret it every moment that passes by; how could I have been such a horrific friend? Sometimes I truly wonderâ⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢m positive my actions will come back one day to haunt me. They have begun already: my wife died, and what about the ghost entering my tent last night? My heart skipped a beat and I had to wake up my poor Lucius, Varro and Claudius to make sure they had seen or heard nothing! I know I stress my boy Lucius more than any other, but it is because I love him the most; he is like family to me and has been there every moment for me when I needed him.But I would never want to put his strength over his working abilities. If I live, which I am terrified will not be for long, I will reward my boy Lucius more than anybody else. I feel I have no one else in this world, I have disappointed the people I loved the most, most of all. How I fel t sorry for Lucius when he fell asleep on his instrument cannot be explained with words; my boy tries his best to keep me satisfied and I am absolutely grateful for that!My guilt no longer allows me to sleep. I donââ¬â¢t want to admit it to anyone but I know it for a fact by myself. My heart stopped when the ghost visited my tent, it was something I didnââ¬â¢t expect! My confusion that moment, made me understand that what was going around was coming right back at me which made my hair stand on end. I have so much to say to that ghost if it comes again, I must admit to it my guilt for killing Caesar, as I am sure it is just he visiting me.

Dr. Jose Rizal’s My Last Farewell: Last Notes Before His Execution
ââ¬Å"Mi ultimo adiosâ⬠(Spanishà for ââ¬Å"My Last Farewellâ⬠) is aà poemà written byà Philippineà national hero Drà Jose Rizalà on the eve of hisà executionon 30 December 1896. This poem was one of the last notes he wrote before his death; another that he had written was found in his shoe but because the text was illegible, its contents remains a mystery. Title Rizal did not ascribe a title to his poem. Mariano Ponce, his friend and fellow reformist, titled ità Mi Ultimo Pensamientoà (My Last Thought) in the copies he distributed, but this did not catch on. ââ¬Å"On the afternoon of Dec. 29, 1896, a day before his execution, Dr.Jose Rizal was visited by his mother, Teodora Alonzo, sisters Lucia, Josefa, Trinidad, Maria and Narcisa, and two nephews. When they took their leave, Rizal told Trinidad in English that there was something in the small alcohol stove (cocinilla), not alcohol lamp (lamparilla). The stove was given to Narcisa by the guard when the party was about to board their carriage in the courtyard. At home, the Rizal ladies recovered from the stove a folded paper. On it was written an unsigned, untitled and undated poem of 14 five-line stanzas. The Rizals reproduced copies of the poem and sent them to Rizal's friends in the country and abroad. In 1897, Mariano Ponce in Hong Kong had the poem printed with the title ââ¬Å"Mi Ultimo Pensamiento. â⬠Fr. Mariano Dacanay, who received a copy of the poem while a prisoner in Bilibid (jail), published it in the first issue ofà La Independenciaà on Sept. 25, 1898 with the title ââ¬Å"Ultimo Adiosâ⬠. â⬠à [1] The stove was not delivered until after the execution as Rizal needed it to light the room. This 14-stanza poem of Jose Rizal talks about his ââ¬Å"Goodbyesâ⬠to his dear Fatherland where his love is dedicated to. He wrote it on the evening before his execution. Farewell, dear Fatherland, clime of the sun caress'd Pearl of the Orient seas, our E den lost! Gladly now I go to give thee this faded life's best, And were it brighter, fresher, or more blest Still would I give it thee, nor count the cost. On the field of battle, ââ¬Ëmid the frenzy of fight, Others have given their lives, without doubt or heed; The place matters not-cypress or laurel or lily white, Scaffold or open plain, combat or martyrdom's plight, T is ever the same, to serve our home and country's need. Interpretation The first stanza speaks about Rizalââ¬â¢s beautiful description of his Fatherland. He used the biblical Eden to describe the Pre-Hispanic Philippines which is an imaginary time of purity and innocence. He adores the beautiful country that he and others are fighting for. He said that he is glad to give his life to Filipinas even though his life was brighter, fresher, or more blest than it isà nowà ââ¬â pertaining to the time when he wrote the poem. The second stanza speaks about the men who gave their life to his beloved country. Riza l said that their dedication and patriotism to the country is without second thoughts. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter how one struggles, that all struggles, all deaths, are worth it if it is for the good of the country. The third stanza speaks about Rizalââ¬â¢s love of liberty. The image of dawn that Rizal used in the first line signifies the liberation that he adores. In the third and fourth line, he says that if the colour of liberation lacks his blood, he must die for the country to attain freedom. The fourth stanza presents the flashback of Rizalââ¬â¢s love for the patria that started when he was young. He was young when he saw the martyrdom of the GOMBURZA and promised that he would dedicate himself to avenge one day for those victims. His dreams were to see his country in eminent liberation, free from sorrow and grief. The fifth stanza repeats Rizalââ¬â¢s dream of complete liberation. All Hail! â⬠signifies that he is positively welcoming the dawn of freedom after his d eath. He also repeats what he has said in the third stanza that it is his desire to dedicate his life to the Patria. The sixth stanza describes the image of Rizalââ¬â¢s grave being forgotten someday. The grassy sod may represent the countryââ¬â¢s development, the growth of liberty, and that with the redemption of the country, he becomes forgotten. Rizal does not say here that he wants monuments, streets, or schools in his name, just a fond kiss and a warm breath so he could feel he is not forgotten. In the seventh stanza, Rizal says he wants to see or feel the moon, dawn, wind, and a bird over his grave. The moonââ¬â¢s beam may represent a night without its gloom like a country without its oppressors. The imagery of dawn has been repeated here and its radiant flashes represent the shining light of redemption that sheds over his honour. Only the wind will lament over his grave. The bird does not lament him but sings of peace, the peace that comes with liberation and the peace with which he rests below. In the eighth stanza, the metaphor of the sun drawing the vapors up to the sky signifies that the earth is being cleansed by the sun like taking away the sorrows and tears that has shed including his last cry. Line 3 reminds us to remember why he died ââ¬â for the redemption of the country. And he wants to hear a prayer in the still evening ââ¬â evening because he may also want to see a beam of light from the moon which he stated in the stanza 7, and that it is before theà dawn. Prayers he stated that will make him rest in peace in Godââ¬â¢s hands.Rizal said in the ninth stanza that he also wants his fellowmen to also pray for others who also have died and suffered for the country. Also pray for the mothers, the orphans and widows, and the captives who also have cried and have tortured, and again, for his soul to rest in peace. The tenth stanza says that Rizalââ¬â¢s tomb is on the graveyard with the other dead people. Rizal says that in the night, he does not want to be disturbed in his rest along with the others and the mystery the graveyard contains. And whenever we hear a sad song emanating from the grave, it is he who sings for his fatherland. In the eleventh stanza, Rizal says a request that his ashes be spread by the plough before it will no longer take significance. His ashes represent his thoughts, words, and philosophy making it his intellectual remains. The symbolic ashes should be spread all over Filipinas to fertilize the new free country long after he is forgotten. The twelfth stanza again speaks about being forgotten but Rizal does not care about it anymore. Oblivion does not matter for he would travel far and wide over his beloved fatherland. He keeps his faith with him as he sings his hymn for the nation.Rizal says goodbye to his adored Fatherland in the thirteenth stanza. He gives goodbye to his parents, friends, and the small children. He gives everything to Filipinas. Now, he satisfies his death by s aying he will be going to a place where there is peace ââ¬â no slaves, no oppressors, no killed faith. He is going to a place where God rules over ââ¬â not the tyrants. Finally, in the last stanza, Rizal cries his farewell to all his fellowmen ââ¬â his childhood friends, and his sweet friend that lightened his way. In the last line, he repeats that ââ¬Å"In Death there is rest! â⬠which means that he, being ready to be executed, is happy to die in peace.

The Classical Dramatic Speech From Sophocles Antigone
The Classical Dramatic Speech From Sophocles' Antigone Written by Sophocles around 440 B.C., the title character in Antigone represents one of the most powerful female protagonists in theatrical history. Her conflict is a simple yet poignant one. She gives her dead brother a proper burial against the wishes of her uncle, Creon, the newly crowned King of Thebes. Antigone willingly defies the law for she devoutly believes that she is doing the will of the gods. A Summary ofà Antigone In this monologue, the protagonist is about to be entombed in a cavern. Although she believes she goes to her death, she contends that she was justified in offering her brother his funeral rites. Yet, because of her punishment, she is uncertain about the ultimate goal of the gods above. Still, she trusts that in the afterlife, if she is at fault, she will learn of her sins. However, if Creon is at fault, the fates will surely inflict revenge upon him. Antigone is theà heroine of the play.à Stubborn and persistent, Antigones strong and feminine character supports her family duty and allows her to fight for her beliefs. The story of Antigone surrounds the dangers of tyranny as well as loyalty to family. Who Sophocles Was and What He Did Sophocles was born in Colonus, Greece in 496 bc and is considered one of the three great playwrights in classical Athens amongst Aeschylus and Euripides.à Famous for the evolution of drama in theater, Sophocles added a third actor and reduced the importance of the Chorus in the execution of the plot. He alsoà focused on character development, unlike other playwrights at the time. Sophocles died around 406 BC. The Oedipus Trilogy by Sophocles includes three plays: Antigone, Oedipus the King, and Oedipus at Colonus. While they are not considered a true trilogy, the three plays are all based on Theban myths and often published together.à It is understood that Sophocles has written over 100 dramas, though only seven full plays are known to have survived today. An Excerpt of Antigone The following excerpt from Antigone is reprinted from Greek Dramas. Tomb, bridal chamber, eternal prison in the caverned rock, whither I go to find mine own, those many who have perished, and whom Persephone hath received among the dead! Last of all shall I pass thither, and far most miserably of all, before the term of my life is spent. But I cherish good hope that my coming will be welcome to my father, and pleasant to thee, my mother, and welcome, brother, to thee; for, when you died, with mine own hands I washed and dressed you, and poured drink-offerings at your graves; and now, Polyneices, tis for tending thy corpse that I win such recompense as this. And yet I honored thee, as the wise will deem, rightly. Never had I been a mother of children, or if a husband had been moldering in death, would I have taken this task upon me in the citys despite. What law, ye ask, is my warrant for that word? The husband lost, another might have been found, and child from another, to replace the first-born; but, father and mother hidden with Hades, no brothers life could ever bloom for me again. Such was the law whereby I held thee first in honor; but Creon deemed me guilty of error therein, and of outrage, ah brother mine! And now he leads me thus, a captive in his hands; no bridal bed, no bridal song hath been mine, no joy of marriage, no portion in the nurture of children; but thus, forlorn of friends, unhappy one, I go living to the vaults of death. And what law of Heaven have I transgressed? Why, hapless one, should I look to the gods anymorewhat ally should I invokewhen by piety I have earned the name of impious? Nay, then, if these things are pleasing to the gods, when I have suffered my doom, I shall come to know my sin; but if the sin is with my judges, I could wish them no fuller measure of evil than they, on their part, mete wrongfully to me. Social science 300 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Social science 300 - Essay Example It is an element of mental destruction that happens between families. Children seem to be the worst affected in the whole scenario. They store pictures of torture and fights within their memories and this is one feeling which is pretty difficult to get rid of. Psychologically, it affects them more than the persons who were in a marriage before they decided to forego the bond itself ââ¬â the bond of marriage, now changed into a divorce deed. (Shaw, Winslow & Flanagan, 1999) Socially, it leaves a scar on the children so much so that they start getting alienated from other kids of the same age. They converse less and as a result open up negligibly. They seldom speak out what is within them and hurting from inside. They seem to be in a constant fight with their existence and life for them becomes a problem ââ¬â a problem that has got no bearing on their actions and yet they are on the receiving end. Academically, these children fall back on the track of education and are less int erested at gaining the new avenues of knowledge and information. They seem unwelcoming to the new technological changes and are happy with their lives, in a desolate area with no one in company. Life for them is a slow killer but a killer for sure. In this paper, the aspect of family remaining as a single knitted unit is highlighted and all the significant elements of keeping a family as a solitary entity are discussed so that a relational basis with psychological comprehension and relationship binding is established in essence. (Chomsky, 2003) With the passage of time, these children grow up to a less secure financial environment and they fall back on their expenses most of the times. They are usually dependent on one of their parents, with the one they live most of the times or in instances where both the parents have let gone on them, they are dependent on their guardians, which could be just about anyone. They are always trying to make both ends meet and

Sign Language in Spain - Research Paper Example At any rate, while these individuals may still find communication to be a chore at times, it is still more or less manageable for them. On the other hand, those who have been deaf since early childhood or even birth have a much harder time getting by in society. Since they have never been able to hear, they will be unlikely to be capable of producing anything more than inarticulate groans, moans and other sounds. Thus, in order to alleviate their difficulty, there are those throughout the years who have come up with sign language. And of course, there have also been those throughout the years who have succeeded in their chosen field in spite of their disability, mainly thanks to sign language. One of the most well-known examples of this is Helen Keller, who managed to become a celebrated author in spite of being both deaf and blind (Bauman 7). Sign language has existed since deaf people have been around. Various studies have allowed important individuals to develop new systems of sign languages based on the local sign languages being used. The establishment of teaching institutions that focuses on educating the deaf and mute with Sign Language has allowed the development of a standardized sign language system. Although standardized, a sign language may still have variations in dialects based on the region and cultural differences. A sign language uses visual sign patterns to transmit meanings instead of acoustic patterns. It uses hand shapes as well as well as facial expressions and body movements that convey specific meanings. Sign Language is known to have started where deaf people exist. It is comprised of gestures, finger spelling, and signs that could represent words or complete thoughts.

Business ethics - Essay Example In such context, it is crucial for management to realize the importance of business ethics in maintaining the sustainability of business operation. Hence the study has decided to look back at importance business ethics in context to modern organizational settings. The study has selected HSBC, which is a renowned bank, for understanding the importance of business ethics in the organization. Analyzing the impact of business ethics on internal and external stakeholders of HSBC will also be the part of the analysis. In the last section the study will provide recommendation to the bank for improving their current business ethics approach. Business Ethics- Theoretical View According to research scholars such as Geraint (2003), Moberg (2003) and Kidd (2003), business ethics play significant role in those cases where the organization is suffering from asymmetric turbulence in terms of business operation, controlling activities of agents or managers, fraudulent activities to achieve undue adv antage and disregard of interest of shareholders and stakeholders. From academic viewpoint, business ethics can be subdivided into three parts such as, Descriptive Business Ethics- moral values of the business owner to run the business in transparent manner without hurting the interest of shareholders and stakeholders and Normative Business Ethics- supporting activities required to control and discourage unfair business practices by organizations (Brenkert, 2004). However, very few research scholars have actually tried to create demarcation between organizational structures driven business ethics from process driven business ethics. In this paper the study will try to identify the role of business ethics in context to organizational structure, organizational process and organizational performances. The proposed model can be viewed in the following manner. (Source: Svensson and Wood, 2011) There is no doubt that the concept of business ethics is multifaceted and number of research to pics can synchronized in implicit or explicit manner with the ethical perspective of business operation. For example, maintaining business ethics in terms offering high value to external stakeholders such as customers (Svensson, 2009), performing corporate social responsibility (CSR) in order to become responsible corporate citizen who is ready to put serious effort to improve quality of life of unprivileged section of the society (Young and Kielkiewicz-Young, 2001), improve the sustainability by forcing the supply chain partners to follow human rights while treating with workers (Lippman,1999), following green purchasing policy to ensure environmental sustainability (Zsidisin and Siferd, 2001), sustainable supply chain management (Svensson, 2007), following corporate governance codes in order to ensure better governance and decrease the scope for the organization to commit financial fraud which can not only hurt the interest of shareholders but also affect the interest of stakehold ers (La Porta et al, 1997 & Shleifer and Vishny, 1997). In order for Maggie to understand the causes and the management of COPD, she must be informed of the prevalence, risk factors, management and therapeutic option for the disease. The information she will gain will help her to prevent the chances of her disease progressing to a more severe stage, and will help her to understand why she has to take certain medications. Prevalence of COPD In 2000, 2.7 million deaths were attributed to COPD, with majority of the deaths occurring in the Western Pacific Region, China included. In developed and industrialized countries, COPD is to blame for 400,000 deaths (Lopez, et al., 2006). Moreover, in North America 3-4% of adults have COPD. It is estimated that 15-25% of persons forty years old and olde r have stage 1 mild COPD or airflow limitation. Since smoking was identified to be the biggest risk factor in COPD, the prevalence of COPD is much higher in smokers and ex-smokers in the 40 and above age group compared to younger individuals. COPD is also more prevalent in men than women (Lopez, et al., 2006), but this observation could be due to the higher number of male smokers. However, as the number of women smokers increase, so did the number of female deaths attributable to COPD (Ronnenberg, 2010). Risk factors for COPD Smoking cigarettes comprise the most important risk factor for COPD. Cigarette smoking is responsible for 80%-90% cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Frequent exposure to second-and smoke also increases the risk of having COPD. However, not all smokers will develop COPD, suggesting that environmental factors and genetic make-up contribute to its prevalence. As an example, COPD has been observed to be more common in whites despite the high number of smokers in the black population. It has also been shown that one type of emphysema is due to the deficiency of alpha-1-protease inhibitor (also known as alpha-1-antitrypsin, or AAT). This genetic defect affects approximately 70,000 Americans and accounts for 1%-3% of COPD cases (Sandford and Silverman, 2002). Another factor that can increase the risk for COPD is a history of childhood lung diseases, which can result in scarring of lungs and reduction of elasticity of the lungs. Exposure to gases, chemical and dust also increase the risk of COPD, and can lead to worsening of the condition, if an individual already has COPD (Ronnenberg, 2010). A study shows that exposure to wood smoke or charcoal smoke is highly related t the development of COPD. This is a common risk factor in developing countries and in Europe where wood or charcoal is used to fuel wood-based ovens (Orozco-Levi, et al., 2006). Stages of COPD severity The severity of COPD is classified by measuring the lung function level using spirometry. This is the process of measuring the breath of an individual. Among the Pulmonary Function Tests, spirometry is the most common. It measures the lung function by measuring the amount (volume) and speed (flow) of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. Spirometry is helpful in the assessment of COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and cystic fibrosis (Barreiro and Perillo, 2004). After conducting the initial spirometric test, a bronchodilator is administered. After this, a new round of tests is

Human Factors in aircraft operations in unfamiliar airfields Research Paper
Human Factors in aircraft operations in unfamiliar airfields - Research Paper Example As per a study, about 80% of the aircraft accidents happen during either landing or take-off of jets, and, thus, such accidents occur at close proximaty to an airport. Pilots may resort to unsafe acts, which may culminate into aircraft accidents due to human errors and violations of standard norms. This research essay will focus on the human factors witnessed by the aircrew in unfamiliar airfields and suggest ways and means to avoid and overcome fallacies that may lead to aircraft accidents. Introduction Some of the deadliest aircraft accidents happened not in the air but on the runways of airports. About 583 air passengers were killed in 1977 in the Canary Islands, when two jumbo jets crashed on a runway. A runway incursion accident in Chicagoââ¬â¢s Midway airport in 1991 killed 34 air passengers. Unfamiliar braking system resulted in an accident in Chicagoââ¬â¢s midway airport in December 2005. When a pilot took a wrong runway for takeoff in Lexington airstrip, about 49 air p assengers were killed in August 2006. When the captain was not able to manage for a gusty and strong cross wind during takeoff, the aircraft departed to the side of the runway in December 2008 at Denver International Airport. (NTSB 2012). Airport plays a pivotal role as it is the place where the aircraft is landing, taking off, parking, and taxing. According to ICAO (International Civil Aeronautics Organization), an aviation accident is one, which is happening of a fatal event during the operation of an aircraft. An accident in an airport may involve the following impacts namely as the accident in an airport during landing may involve severe damage to the atmosphere which includes the loss of property or life, and it may also create an acute social affliction. Further, airport accident while landing in a new location may emanate from various environmental factors like failure of equipment, human error and other associated risk elements. (Czerny, 2010, p.4-3). This research essay wil l conduct analysis about the issues faced by the pilots while landing at unfamiliar airfields and will make suggestion how to overcome the same. Issues Faced by the Pilots in Unfamiliar Airfields while Landing or Takeoff The ultimate safety of the aircraft and passengers are entrusted to the captain of the flight. There is a need on the part of the captain to understand strengths and Achilles' heel of each of the crew members and should be able to assign actions whenever it is needed. Under the Crew Resource Management (CRM), flight crew security is covered. In resolution of any probable security incident, captain is needed to treat and respect all crew members equally and properly. Proper training should be given to crew members to develop a strong state of mental ability for handling any critical situation. Each and every crew member should build up the buoyancy to be aware what is to be done in an emergency scenario and to react suitably when an incident occurs. (Williams & Wallt rip, 2004, p354). As per a study, about 80% of the jet aircraft accidents happen during either landing or take-off of flights, and thus such accidents are occurring at the proximate of an airport. Hence, there is a heightened peril of serious injury or death both to passengers and to the nearby communities residing close to the airport. If we analyze the happening of an accident during landing or take ââ¬âoff, one can find many reasons like the type of aircraft involved, the airport infrastructures, human factors and metrological conditions. Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Internal Controls Essay
Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Internal Controls - Essay Example The leadership is composed of qualified people both academically and management wise and hence will not only provide new aspect academically but also ensure that the management system is coordinated which leads to effective planning. The structure of PASSHE comprises of the board of governors, the chancellor, the 14 presidents of the universities and 14 councils of trustees each representing the 14 universities. The board of governors which is made of 20 members is the one that makes the final decision and this prevents power being vested in one person only (the chancellor). The structure also permits decentralization of decisions and resources and hence making planning easier and faster. The culture of PASSHE is mostly derived from the mission statement which is to provide instructions to graduate and undergraduate students beyond even the masterââ¬â¢s level and in the fields of arts, sciences and even applied fields. It is this mission that has ensured its sole culture is furthering education and professionalism. It is the strict following of this mission that has led to PASSHE having even over 600,000 alumni, an increase in the universities and even an introduction of new studies. The internal processes of PASSHE include the governance of the employees, students and facilities. The smooth running of these areas is what makes the institution achieve its commonwealth standards. If one of these areas and their processes fails to work or slows down, then the rest will also be affected because these internal processes are interdependent. Planning therefore must involve these areas

Examining class differences Essay Example for Free
Examining class differences Essay (a)Explain briefly what is meant by the term ââ¬Ëelaborated speech codeââ¬â¢ . Elaborate speech code is usually associated with middle-class, well educated people. It uses a wide variety of vocabulary, is more context based, uses grammatically complex sentences, communicates abstract ideas and is mostly context-free. (b)Identify three policies that governments have introduced to compensate for material and cultural disadvantage, apart from Educational Priority Areas. Compensatory education is a policy designed in order to tackle the problem of cultural deprivation, by providing resources to communities as well as schools in deprived areas. An example of a compensatory education programme is Operation Head Start in the United States, which is one of the best known examples of such programmes. Operation Head Start focuses on pre-school ââ¬Ëplanned enrichmentââ¬â¢ education in poorer areas, which was introduced in the 1960s. Their aim was to develop childrenââ¬â¢s learning skills and instil achievement motivation. This included tasks such as: setting up nursery classes, home visits by health visitors and educational psychologists, improving parenting skills and the creation of intensive learning programmes for deprived children. Sesame Street, the popular TV programme, was initially created as part of Head Start, in order to reach young children and reflecting the values and attitudes needed for educational success; such as the importance of general knowledge, literacy and numeracy. In the UK, there have been several compensatory education programmes over the years, such as the Education Priority Areas that were created in the 1960s, Education Action Zones, which were introduced in the 1960s, and more recently, with the launch in 2000, comes Sure Start. Sure Start is a nationwide programme aimed at pre-school children as well as their parents. However, it also has non-educational aims, such as improving childrenââ¬â¢s health. Sure Start was introduced by the British Government in order to tackle poverty and social exclusion. The centres available provide integrated education, family support, support with parental employment, care and health services. Sure Startââ¬â¢s main aim is to work with parents to promote the physical, intellectual, educational and social development of babies and young children, particularly those who are disadvantaged. (c)Outline some of the ways in which material deprivation may affect educational achievement. Material deprivation is a lack of resources and necessities needed to live a basic lifestyle, such as an adequate diet, housing, clothing, or in some cases, the money to be able to buy these things. Material deprivation can affect educational achievement as the result of the lack of these necessities. Children in education will need financial support from their parents/carers in order to pursue a sufficient education; however disadvantaged families cannot afford educational aids. As well as that, families living in poverty may have limited space in their home. This leads to overcrowding, which means there is nowhere for the child to study. Also, this could lead to illness, depending on the state and cleanliness of the house. For example, dampness can cause a variety of illnesses, which leads to absence at school, therefore, lessening the childââ¬â¢s chance of a successful education. Some parents may force their children to leave school early and pursue a career in order to provide extra income for the family. (d)Using material from Item A (source) and elsewhere, assess the view that working class children under-achieve because they are culturally deprived. The idea that working-class children will most likely under-achieve due to a lack of culture, also known as cultural deprivation, refers to children lacking the norms, values, beliefs, skills and knowledge that a society would regard as important and necessary. The attributes that these children should know and learn are, in most cases, taught by their parents and are passed to the next generation through socialisation. All children are socialised differently, and the social class of the parent has a huge impact on the child and may affect their achievement in education. According to the cultural deprivation theory, some working-class parents fail to communicate and instil the appropriate norms, values, beliefs, skills and knowledge needed for educational success. However, there are other factors that can determine how well a child does within education. For example, material deprivation, cultural capital and economic capital can also have an impact on how well some children will attain, therefore cultural deprivation is not the only factor and may not be the most important reason to why working-class children under-achieve.

The Causes Of The Civil War Essay -- essays research papers
"The tragic ââ¬Ëfireball in the nightââ¬â¢ imagined by Jefferson had finally rung. The Missouri Compromise had failed. Proslavery and antislavery civilians clashed in the streets and took up arms. Thousands of Northerners were willing to die for their beliefs. The Civil War had begun. The states were at war with each other." This dividing battle between the North and the South was unavoidable. The Civil War was caused by economic, political and moral problems. It all started by an alarming increase in a need for cotton, which triggered the building of a barrier between two territories in a growing nation. New Machinery was changing the textile industry in New England and Britain. These mills needed more and more cotton, creating a new demand in the south. For this trade with Europe, after 1812, raw cotton accounted for one-third all cotton exports of the United States. By 1830, it increased to half. Cotton quickly became a big money-making cash crop for the South and North economy alike. But the demand also revived the need for slaves. The plantations had to be worked, and blacks were a cheap, efficient way to get the cotton picked. To make their jobs easier, Eli Whitney took advantage of the new idea, and invented the cotton gin(short for engine). It rapidly cleaned the seeds from the short, sticky fibers of upland cotton, the variety that grew all over the South. The process was simple: a roller carried raw cotton along wooden slats. Sharp metal teeth thrust through the slats and quickly pulled the fibers from the seeds. In 1794, he obtained a patent. Whitney still earned little because it was simple enough for manufacturers to copy. Even though the machine made attaining cotton faster, slaves were still pushed to work harder and produce more. Blacks under captivity certainly led a harsh, unfair life. But that is where the white southerners believed blacks belonged. Northerners knew better. Harriet Beecher-Stowe, a female, black abolitionist was aware of these conditions. She wrote Uncle Tomââ¬â¢s Cabin, which was published in 1852, and described the incredible cruelty and horrors of slavery. Stowe wanted to "write something that would make the whole nation feel what an accursed thing slavery is." Her novel became widely popular, and within a year, readers had bought 300,000 copies. Wherever it went, it ... ...opular sovereignty was also put into effect. This act gave the voters, in each territory, the right to decide whether to become a free state or a slave state. Together, they rendered the Missouri Compromise meaningless. As the Southââ¬â¢s dependence on slavery increased between 1790 and 1860, the gap between the Southern cotton economy and industrial economy of the North widened. The opposing goals and needs of the North and South created a deeper conflict- a conflict that eventually lead to war. Basically, the North fought to keep the union together, and give black slaves freedom, while the South fought for their lifestyle, homes, and to keep things together economically. The northerners had high moral issues while the Southerners wanted to keep their plantations and cotton production. They werenââ¬â¢t willing to give up there slaves. There were too many conflicts between the two territories, so they fought to resolve them. John Brown, a vengeful abolitionist put it best, "the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away, but with blood". The north won the war, and ties were broken. The barrier they had started to build so long ago finally crumbled.

Vermont :: essays research papers
à à à à à On behalf of myself, and many other students, I would like to formally address the Drug and Alcohol problem that accompanied the 1999-2000 school year Vermont trip. Many times I have heard stories about the ââ¬Å"infamousâ⬠Vermont Ski trip, and the many illegal things that have occurred consistently throughout the years. To the best of my knowledge this behavior was ignored, overlooked, and typical of this trip. So in believing that this kind of ââ¬Å"partyingâ⬠was habitual, I decided to participate along with several others who had attended past trips. à à à à à à à à à à At first I was hesitant in bringing anything, but after a couple of conversations with certain individuals, I was convinced that it would be all right to do so without any punishment being enforced. Thus brought me to obtaining the ââ¬Å"singleâ⬠bottle I was bringing for a friend ,and I to consume with others, along with the other alcoholic beverages brought on the trip by my peers. à à à à à à à à à à This brings us to the time of departure for Vermont, on Thursday March 17, 2000. At approximately 11:50 PM I arrived to load the bus. At a little after 12:00 AM we left the Holley High School for Vermont, without ââ¬Å"A BAG CHECKâ⬠by any of the seven chaperones. After a ten hour drive we arrived at our destination, Stowe Ski Resort. At around 4:30 PM we loaded the bus to go to the Courtyard By Marriot, the hotel in which we would be staying at for the remainder of the trip. Following our arrival we were given the room assignments, we then unpacked our bags quickly, and my roommates and I hid the alcohol that we each brought under our beds. After that a majority of us students went to the pool, and jacuzzi for a swim before our expected 7:00 PM dinner time. Dinner lasted for about a half an hour, to forty-five minutes, and soon after I then again went to the pool with a couple of people for another swim. à à à à à Around 8:30 PM I returned upstairs to a friends room, where I then received a phone call from one of my roommates asking me if I planned on returning to our room to ââ¬Å"drink.â⬠I answered hesitantly, but after a little debating I decided to go back to my room. At that moment I only returned ,to change out of my swim clothes, before I headed back to the friends room. While I was in my room changing I was asked by two of my roommates to compare their drinks, and

Image Guided Micro-needle Steering System for Eye Surgery
Image Guided Micro-needle Steering System for Eye Surgery Abstraction: This paper proposes the design of a complete state-of-the-art image guided micro-needle ( ex. subcutaneous, or chamfer tip acerate leafs ) maneuvering system, which can automatically present anticoagulant drugs straight to the blood coagulums in the retinal vass ; or, can help sawboness in the arrangement of optic micro-stent by augmenting their capablenesss and cut downing restrictions by bring forthing: ( 1 ) an offline optimum three dimensional ( 3D ) surgical flight program ; and later ( 2 ) steer them by placing the mirco-needle in an offline 3D precise map of the oculus. The system specification includes: ( 1 ) a eye/head-surgical stationary tool positioning system: A dynamic, adaptable, and stable mechanical interface between the caput and the robotic surgical tool, ( 2 ) a 3D/4D multi-modal ocular system, ( 3 ) an intelligently constrained 3D surgical trajectory/path-planning system, and a ( 4 ) ocular servo based automated gesture accountant. Introduction and Motivation This subdivision of the proposal paper, briefly, introduces the assorted oculus jobs to foreground the technological restrictions, and later emphasizes the importance of developing a smart dedicated optic surgical unit. Glaucoma is an oculus status which affects and later amendss the ocular nervus, which transmits images to our encephalon. The status is often characterized by the buildup of unwanted force per unit area within our eyes ; this force per unit area is called the intraocular force per unit area ( IOP ) . Once developed, the state of affairs bit by bit worsens, and can ensue in lasting vision loss. IOP, normally, develops when the circulation of the aqueous wit fluid is interrupted ââ¬â possibly the circulating channel is clogged. To alleviate such force per unit area, the usual surgical process involves easing the flight of this force per unit area through trabeculectomy. Although trabeculectomy is the surgical criterion, nevertheless, there are hazards of complications ; such as infection, escape, and annoyance. On the other manus, Canaloplasty is, besides, a feasible non-penetrating surgical process for glaucoma patients. The technique places a micro-catheter or tubing in the Schle mm Canal, which is the natural drainage pipe for our eyes. This enlarges the canal and thereby expeditiously reduces force per unit area. Retinal vena occlusion ( RVO ) is a sort of aneurism in the retinal vena, which hardens the arterias and frequently inspired the formation of blood coagulum. RVO are of two types ( 1 ) cardinal vena or ( CRVO ) , and ( 2 ) subdivision venas or BRVO ; it blocks the little retinal venas that carry blood from the retina. Retina, as we know, is an of import tissue bed in our interior oculus ; positioned at the dorsum of the oculus, it is covered with specialised nervus cells that react to visible radiation and it converts them into nervus signals and sends them to the encephalon. Intuitively, similar to Glaucoma, RVO develops unwanted force per unit area on the retinal system. The most common intervention involves presenting anticoagulant drugs straight to blood coagulums in retinal vass cite { 6micm } . A possible fresh solution can be the precise arrangement of micro stent to make a new or an alternate tract for the extra fluid to run out, thereby commanding and cut downing the IOP ( blood, or aqueous wit ) . The thought is really similar to the coronary angioplasty. However, steering a surgical instrument into such complex environment is really slippery and physically really hard, if non impossible. To call a few: ( 1 ) an eye/head-surgical tool comparative motion, ( 2 ) surgeonââ¬â¢s manus shudder, ( 3 ) scratch and sutura truth, and most significantly ( 4 ) hapless visibleness. Such restrictions lead us to the inquiry, ââ¬Å" extit { How make you successfully plan such a complex micro surgical process? } â⬠Intuitively, it is apprehensible that recognizing such fresh surgical process would necessitate development of smart instruments or newer engineering. Computer vision, unreal intelligence, and robotics, over the old ages, have significantly revolutionized minimally invasive surgery: No average sternotomy, less opportunity of infections, less bleeding, therefore fewer yearss for recovery cite { ex1, ex2, ex3, ex4 } . Therefore, it is logical to anticipate that robotics can supply such smart option by significantly magnifying human physical capacity by shudder reduction/elimination, vision sweetening, and supplying cognition of the instrumentsââ¬â¢ probabilistically precise spacial location during the surgery. In this proposal paper we would wish to suggest a futuristic image guided micro-needle guidance robotic model which is specially designed to cut down the aforesaid surgical restrictions involved in oculus surgery. The grounds for taking a acerate leaf based surgical system are inspired from similar successful medical applications. Acerate leafs have been widely used in medical intervention for presenting drugs, minimally invasive acquisition of subsurface tissue cite { ex5, ex6 } . Accurate arrangement and interpolation can significantly find the success of a process cite { ex6 } . However, practically, a clinician has limited control over the way of the acerate leaf, once it enters into the tissue. Therefore, the ability to maneuver a needle inside tissue could significantly better the effectivity of acerate leafs based processs cite { reed } . The following logical inquiry is, ââ¬Å" extit { Why choosing a robotic-artificially intelligent solution model? } Typically needle interpolation involves complex contact based mechanical interactions between the acerate leaf and the tissue. Furthermore, the needle arrangement process, sometimes, a consecutive lined executable interpolation is non realizable due to the placement of assorted critical anatomical constructions. Therefore, intuitively, the job of surgical way planning would hold been a batch relieved if the acerate leaf was cleverly dirigible cite { reed } . The staying portion of the paper is organized as follows. Section 2 explains the elaborate technology job and the associated environmental premises. Section 3 briefly outlines the cardinal mechanical design demand of the surgical unit: The Interface. Section 4 discusses the proposed novel 3D/4D multimodal ocular counsel system ; followed by the forced 3D surgical trajectory/path-planning system in subdivision 5. The ocular servo based optimum gesture accountant with be addressed in subdivision 6, followed by the decision in subdivision 7. The Engineering Problem and the Associated Assumptions To better understand the job, allow us visualise a medical exigency and futuristic robotic intercession. A pre-operative optical coherency tomographical ( OCT ) image of the retina indicates that a patient have retinal vena occlusion cite { 6micm, oct1 } . An offline 3D OCT based spacial map of the oculus was developed cite { oct1, oct2, oct3 } ; the map besides registered blood flow information based on Fourier sphere optical coherency tomographycite { oct4 } . Therefore, the optic Atlass would incorporate the vena construction and corresponding blood flow information. Based on the spacial place of the aneurism identified through the aforesaid offline optic 3D Atlass, an optimum surgical 3D plan/trajectory is determined cite { oct5 } . An image guided micro-needle ( ex. subcutaneous, or chamfer tip acerate leafs ) steering-robotic system, trusting on such information would automatically present anticoagulant drugs straight to the blood coagulums in the retinal vass ; or, can help sawboness in the arrangement of optic micro-stent by augmenting their capablenesss and cut downing restrictions by ( 1 ) cut downing shudder, ( 2 ) bring forthing an offline optimum three dimensional ( 3D ) surgical flight program, and later ( 3 ) steer them by placing the mirco-needle in an offline 3D OCT inspired theoretical account. Furthermore, the semi automated strategy would affect the surgeonsââ¬â¢ having tactile feedback to enable tactual exploration and appropriate application of forces to weave cite { hap1 } . Therefore, the cloting drug is delivered automatically, or the optic micro-stent is placed semi-automatically. The premise of the system is that the patient undergoing the operation is, at least, locally anesthetized to immobilise the troubled oculus. The oculus palpebras are decently strapped, and the oculus is automatically held fixed with a microkeratome. Furthermore, as a safety step an oculus tracking device is invariably supervising the motion of the oculus and compensates consequently. The Interface: The Fundamental Mechanical Design Requirement The cardinal demands for the robotic unit are simple: ( 1 ) Zero comparative motion between the caput and the surgical acerate leaf, and ( 2 ) zero comparative motion between the acerate leaf and the oculus. This would be achieved automatically in a fresh manner. In the mechanical interface the acerate leaf based surgical unit is mounted on top of a stiff construction ; the construction is automatically attached to the caput. Therefore, any little motion of the caput is every bit translated in the acerate leaf. To contradict the quiver consequence, the surgical unit would hold its ain gesture feeling three dual-axis illumination MEMS accelerometers. An adaptative zero-phase filter will be implemented to separate the tremulous/vibrational motion from the intended controlled motion. Finally, the forward dynamic theoretical account would be feedback linked, through a PID gesture accountant, to the oculus tracking unit to guarantee robust steady coevals of control jurisprudence. The accountant would counterbalance for the comparative motions by debaring the acerate leaf in an equal but opposite gesture whihc minimizes a certain cost map. The cost map is related to the comparative motion of the tip from the coveted flight, this comparative motion can be detected by put ining a extremely magnified stereo imaging system. The apparatus would be really similar to the apparatus used to make the semiautomated intra-ocular optical maser surgery cite { ctrl1, ctrl2, ctrl3 } . However, in out instance acerate leaf is non seeable, therefore a shade acerate leaf will be tracked, where the comparative geometry between the shade acerate leaf and the existent acerate leaf is known. Other smarter accountant strategy, other than PID, can be used, nevertheless ; PID is the first to be tested. Towards aMulti-modalOffline Atlas for the Inter Ocular-Surgical Planning This subdivision explains the development of the fresh futuristic 3D/4D multimodal offline ocular representation of the human oculus. The thought is to unify complimentary imaging modes to make a 3D/4D offline map of the human oculus. The model consists of developing a 3D multimodal representation of the oculus, followed by extra 1D ocular augmentation by supplying vascular and corresponding blood/fluid flow information. The technique involves imaging the oculus utilizing three complimentary modes ( a ) Optical Coherence Tomography ( OCT ) , ( B ) Confocal Microscopy ( CM ) , and ( degree Celsius ) Ultrasound Biomicroscopy ( UBM ) ; these are all 3D imaging techniques, which provides complimentary information. OCT provides sub-millimeter declaration without the demand for ionising radiation and associated hazards, nevertheless, the built-in sprinkling of photons in the tissue leads to blurring of the acquired images cite { img11 } ; in add-on, OCT retinene imagination has been used to visualise the posterior pole in human eyes cite { img9 } . CM provides high declaration 3D images, rejects out-of-focus information, therefore ensuing in fuzz free images cite { img11 } . Finally, UBM uses high-frequency transducers to image organic structure structures at smaller deepness with a higher declaration cite { img11, img13, img14 } . These images are acquired offline, prior to the surgery, and registered uti lizing some technique to make elaborate 3D map of the oculus. The dimensional extension to 4D is achieved by overlapping blood flow and vascular information from extra imagination modes: ( a ) 3D Dual-beam-scan Doppler optical coherency angiography ( OCA ) , ( B ) Doppler optical coherency imaging ( OCT ) , ( degree Celsius ) Bioptigen spectral-domain OCT, and ( vitamin D ) 3D micro-computed imaging ( 3D micro-CT ) . OCA provides visual image of the vascular constructions cite { img3 } and has been shown to successfully image the microvasculature of the posterior portion of human oculus cite { img1 } . D-OCT, a derived function of OCT, can supply both structural 3D and functional blood flow information by uniting coherency gating and optical maser Doppler effects cite { img2 } . Furthermore, Fourier domain D-OCT techniques can bring forth 3D informations sets which can make 100s of 1000s of axial scans within a few seconds. These images can assist visualise the retinal and choroidal vasculature in 3D and, later compute absolute blood flow every bit good as entire retinal blood flow cite { img2, img3, img4 } . Finally, Bioptigen spectral-domain OCT and 3D micro-CT, both, have been used to image the 3D aqueous wit out flow information cite { img10 } . Constrained 3D/4D Surgical Trajectory/path-planning System The intraocular part of the human oculus is really complex, therefore the surgery would necessitate careful planning. We propose to implement the flight planning strategy see the extremely deformable kineticss of the environment cite { plan1 } . This technique uses optimum control technique and simulation to outputs the flight program which maximizes the chance of success while sing the uncertainly of the ( 1 ) distortion theoretical account, and ( 2 ) the systemsââ¬â¢ noisy province detection, and ( 3 ) unpredictable propulsion strategy. The technique has been shown to be successful in FEM based surgical simulations affecting steering bevel-tip dirigible acerate leafs through pieces of deformable tissue around obstructions.

30 Seconds to Mars Essay
Launched in 1998 by the bandââ¬â¢s front man Jared Leto and his older brother, drummer Shannon Leto, 30 Seconds to Mars found success in the 2000ââ¬â¢s with their musical mix of post-grunge, scream, and hard rock. The band gained an audience with its self-titled debut, but it was the platinum-selling album ââ¬Å"A Beautiful Lieâ⬠that opened the doors in 2005, gaining the band a spot on MTV while making the way for a long road of tours. The bands mates also showed a high appreciation for marketing, which they revisited several years later by using fanââ¬â¢s pictures for their third album, ââ¬Å"This Is Warâ⬠. Jared Leto enlisted the help of his brother and co-founded 30 Seconds to Mars in 1998. The group made its studio appearance four years later, releasing a self-titled album whose post-grunge sound betrayed an affinity for groups like Chevelle and Incubus. Although it only achieved modest success, the growing 30 Seconds to Mars still laid the foundation for a healthy career. Before all the great hype the band first started in 1998 it wasnââ¬â¢t well known so they expanded their music by coming to America, gold status in multiple foreign countries, and producing several singles, including two Top 10 rock hits. 30 Seconds to Mars heavily toured as a result, sporting a new lineup that included lead guitarist Tomo Miliceivc and bassist Matt Wachter in addition to the two Letos. Wachter threw in the towel in 2007, the band continued to tour around the world for the rest of the year, making several major festivals such as Roskilde and Pinkpop. They also played opening shows for bands like The Used and Linkin Park. The band has gone through a lot in their background for the band itself and the members. Created in 1998 by Jared Leto (vocals and guitar) and his brother, Shannon (drums), 30 Seconds to Mars merely began as a small family project. Things began to speed up quickly, however, and Matt Wachter later joined the band as bassist. After a small revolving door of guitarists (as the bandââ¬â¢s first two guitarists, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler, left the band due to issues primarily related to touring), the three auditioned Tomo Milicevic to round out the bandââ¬â¢s roster. Matt Wachter plays keyboards for the band. Jared Leto might be a name that some people have heard before, before the band started he was a major actor. Their music is filled with emotions and are very personal to them (their songs are based on real life experiences) This band is not about fame, money, and any of that stuff. They are all about the music and they sing from their hearts. Jared never used his title as an actor to promote his band and never will. Their unique style of music and heart moving lyrics fills the listeners heart with so much emotion.
Types of Reinforcement
People have been using the theory of reinforcement even though they have not properly studied this theoretical concept. They have been employing this theory to strengthen the response for a particular stimulus or environmental event (Huitt and Hummel). Reinforcement theory generally states that the frequency of eliciting the same response will likely increase if it is followed by a reinforcer. The probability of repeating the same behavior in the future is dependent on what occurs after the individual engages in that behavior (Malala, et al. ). There are four types of reinforcement. Each type of reinforcement is distinguished by the kind of stimulus presented after the response. In positive reinforcement, for instance, a positive stimulus is presented after a certain response to increase the frequency of that response of behavior (Malala, et al. ,; Huitt and Hummel). The positive stimulus usually comes in the form of rewards. Positive reinforcement has been used in school settings to reinforce positive attitude towards studying. For example, academic awards such as medals and certificates are given to students who excel academically or in a certain field such as sports. While the previous example used a tangible positive reinforcer, it could also be intangible. To cite an example, according to Kobus and her associates (48), the praise, support, and encouragement of teachers and significant others (e. g. , parents) motivate grade school students to work hard and increase their self-efficacy (i. e, confidence in oneââ¬â¢s capability). Positive reinforcement has often been used by parents as well. They reward their children with a reinforcer such as money for their hard work in school or for cleaning their room. The concept has also been applied by companies for their employees. Salary increase and promotion, for example, are awarded to hardworking employees for their outstanding performance. On the other hand, in negative reinforcement, the reinforcer, which is s omething negative, is withdrawn after the response. Repetition of this phenomenon will increase the occurrence of the response. This is usually observed when a person wants to avoid the negative reinforcer (Huitt and Hummel). For instance, children obey the house rules so that their parents will not get mad at them.In this example, the negative reinforcer is the anger of the parents while the response is the obedience of children. At work, employees meet their requirements and deadlines to avoid being reprimanded by their boss. Most people think that negative reinforcement and punishment is the same, which is a misconception. While negative reinforcement elicits a positive response due to the removal of the negative reinforcer after the response, punishment lessens the frequency of a response or behavior by presenting a negative stimulus after the response (Huitt and Hummel).Punishment has been used at home, in school, and in the workplace. For example, at home, parents ground their children when they do not come home at the time agreed. In school, punishment is imposed to discipline students. A simple example of this is reprimanding noisy students for disrupting the class. Punishment has been a system adopted in schools in the form of disciplinary policies where punishment for specific types of school offense are indicated (Gaustad 3). In the workplace, an example of punishment could be reducing the salary of employees when they do not report to the office without filing a leave. As punishment, they will not be paid for the days they did not come to work. The fourth type of reinforcement is extinction. In extinction, the frequency of a response or behavior is weakened when the reinforcement of a previously reinforced behavior is removed (Huitt and Hummel). To cite an example, in the field of psychology, extinction learning has been used in treating disorders such as anxiety disorder. The goal of the treatment is to extinguish fear by teaching the patients that the stimulus they fear no longer results in harmful consequences (Anderson and Insel 319).For instance, the patient is exposed to a previously feared event associated with an unpleasant outcome to get him or her accustomed to the event until he or she does not fear it anymore. Extinction can also occur in a corporate setting. When a company stops giving bonuses to hardworking employees, they may lose motivation to work hard, resulting in a decline in productivity. Based on the examples stated earlier, it could be concluded that reinforcement affects the behavior of individuals, children and adults alike.Reinforcement can either increase or decrease the frequency of a certain behavior depending on the stimulus or reinforcer presented (or removed) after the behavior. Hence, it could be inferred that behavior can be modified according to the pleasantness of the reinforcement that can be experienced for doing a certain behavior. For example, an individualââ¬â¢s positive or desired b ehavior can be maintained with positive or negative reinforcements, while his negative or unwanted behaviors can be extinguished through punishment or extinction.

Organisations & Behaviour Learning Organisations Essay
Organisations & Behaviour Learning Organisations - Essay Example A learning organisation intentionally designs the structures and strategies in order to enhance and maximise the learning of its employees. (Dodgson, 1993) With the changing environment of business and advancing technology the notion of the Learning organisations has gained much more importance. Learning has become an important characteristic of an organisation in order to compete in the global business. Learning is a volatile and dynamic concept through which the process of updating in an organisation takes place. With the growing size of the corporations and continuous innovations in the field of technology the individual learning has transformed to the notion of the organisational learning. The notion of learning plays an important part in the progress of an individual just like that the learning on the organisational level plays an important part in the growth of an organisation. The organisational group of people can define the organisational learning as the sum of the learning activities of the individual, which takes the shape of combined effort. (Dodgson, 1993; Fiol & Lyles, 1985). An organisational learning program should be designed in the way that it is not lost when the members of the organisation leave the organisation. ... ive environment of the business in today's high pace changing business environment enhancing the learning capabilities of business is the solution of half of the problems. (Prahalad & Hamel, 1994). Equally important is the creation of an unlearning organisation which essentially means that the organisation must forget some of its past. Thus, learning occurs amidst such conflicting factors (Dodgson, 1993). Most of the leading companies of the world like Shell were among the first to embrace the notion of learning. In Shell Arie de Geus described learning as the only strategy to compete effectively. Hence learning organisation can be defined as "The essence of organisational learning is the organisation's ability to use the amazing mental capacity of all its members to create the kind of processes that will improve its own" (Dixon, 1994) "A Learning Company is an organisation that facilitates the learning of all its members and continually transforms itself" (Pedler, Burgoyne & Boydell, 1991) "Organisations where people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning to learn together" (Peter Senge, 1990) The following are the important characteristics of the learning organisations: Learning organisations adopts the external environments. They are flexible and continue the process of change. Depicts the combination of individual and collective learning. Keeps on learning with the outcomes. Learning can be done in two ways. 1) Single loop 2) Double loop In single loop learning people learn in a way prescribed to them by the organisation. In double loop learning people, people not only learn in a

Learning and Assessment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Learning and Assessment - Essay Example Although, the alternative assessment strategies using various technologies was better way to assess a student than the traditional one, yet using both types of assessments in triangulation was the most appropriate approach. Before discussing that which method was better, one must keep in mind what is assessment and what are its essentials In literal terms, the word assessment means to determine the real worth of something. In the educational setting, it refers to the evaluation done by the teacher to find the extent to which the student had been able to learn something. A good assessment should be complex enough to involve the students in real thinking process, open enough to appreciate diverse opinions but at the same time, it should also be constraint enough to enable a fair scoring system. Initially, the only method for the assessment, used by the teachers, was the traditional one. This means that a written test used to be taken, having questions and answers, preferably in the form of Multiple Choice Questions. This tradition was followed for centuries. Even today, this traditional methodology of assessment is being used in most of developing countries till matriculation level, atleast. On one hand, this approach was easy to conduct and scoring could be done more objectively but this traditional approach led to several problems too. The first problem was the misrepresentation of learning... The goal of assessment is to check for the level to which the student had learnt. But a written test was just a sampling of those learning outcome, only on the basis of that 'sample', it would not be appropriate to grade the student. Another problem with written test is that, ideally the evaluation should be a continuous process. However, the written test used to be the evaluation only at certain point of time. There is a possibility that the student would not have been feeling well at that time and thus could not attempt the paper well, in such cases; such assessment strategy fails to portray the true picture. THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES - Advantages and Drawbacks: On the contrary to the real purpose of assessment, a written test could provide the true picture only if the writing skills of the students permitted so, thus it became primarily the test of writing skill before being the test of original stuff. Suppose there was the written test of science, it should test whether the student has grasped the particular concept or not (Shepardson 2001), but two students delivering the same content, but one had better abilities to express himself, he was likely to get more marks than the other. However, the alternative assessment strategies used various technologies to remove the loopholes of the traditional system. The alternative assessment strategies were based on the ideas that the assessment should be able to involve the student to involve in thinking process that is supposed to be invoked in him, because of the learning that he had gained. Furthermore, it was not dependent totally on the writing skills of the students. Above all, it was capable of accepting the diverse ideas and responses. However, one major challenge

Peer Polity Interaction and Socio-Political Change Essay
Peer Polity Interaction and Socio-Political Change - Essay Example This mainly related to the Barbarian tribes and, to some extent, other empires. The interactions were mainly given as the cause for the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the first period of happenings that were considered to be the Dark Age. There is an overall perspective in our society that reflects the way of life. Politics, which include the method through which a given group of people are governed, is diverse and varies from one society to the other. Soci-political changes therefore reflect the general changes in the ways of life. Such changes are normally associated with certain aspects of doing things and the historical perspectives that shape our ways of life (Cioffi-Revilla 2005). It is normally crucial for people to revisit some paradigms that underline the collective thinking and action that various leadership styles reflect in our society. During periods of crisis certain methodologies are employed to solve the problems that exist. The need to revisit some of the paradigms that underlie collective action and thinking always occur. A large body of theoretical and empirical research has attempted to confirm that societies strive politically and economically whenever they are able to build strong non-state actors that foster community organizations. Every society has the potential to contribute in various ways to the common good of humanity. According to Burger (681-604), there is the possibility of the existence of the production of negative social capital by individuals who do not cooperate in doing what is commonly good for the entire society. Any attempt to analyze politics in antiquity normally presents various new opportunities for both political and international relations. Governance is done through institutions of leadership that are put up to ensure that services reach the target subjects and efficient leadership is practiced. The term polity is normally

Goyas Ghost's Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Goyas Ghost's - Movie Review Example As the French were allies, their troops were welcomed with open arms despite the diplomatic unease that was transpiring between the two countries. The official warfare started when in February 1808, Napoleon ordered the French commanders to capture key fortresses which would allow the country to gain dominance over its former ally. On 29th February, Barcelona was conquered by French and soon the Spanish power began to decline. Whenever there is a war, there are crimes, atrocities, some of which are recorded while the others are lost in time. There were innumerable incidents of bloodshed, torture, and rape along with other war crimes. Much of this was captured in the art of printmaker Francis Goya. The ââ¬ËDisasters of Warââ¬â¢ is a collection of 82 prints made by Goya, which depicts the war along with its gory details. The prints are seen by many as a protest against the war. Another collection of Goya, painted between 1819 and 1820 represents his desolate outlook of humanity d ue to the things he had seen and experienced during the Peninsula war. These paintings became the inspiration for a movie released in 2006 by the name of Goyaââ¬â¢s Ghosts. The movie Goyaââ¬â¢s Ghosts directed by Milos Forman in 2006 presents the Spanish region during the War. The most important characters of the movie are Lorenzo, Ines, and Goya. Out of the three characters, only Goya existed in reality. The others are fictitious characters created only to present the movie through Goyaââ¬â¢s perspective. Most of the focus during the movie is, however, not on Goya but rather on Lorenzo, Ines and other characters through which lives of the people during the war are represented. The movie depicts how the lives of even those who were not directly linked with the warfare were deeply affected. The whole generations were swept into poverty which forced them to enter the professions which they would not normally dream of. This is shown by the character of Ines who is first impris oned by the Catholic Church, which inflicts pain on her while she is naked.à à à Ã

The Tell Tale Heart Essay Essay In Poes The Tell-Tale Heart, the narrator claims that he is not mad but his behavior tells a different story. He is truly determined to destroy another male human being, not because of jealousy or animosity but because one of his eyes resembled that of a vulture- a pale blue eye, with a film over it (1206). The narrator sees the man with this ghastly eye as a threat to his well being, but it is he who is a menace to his own being. He kills the man with pride only to concede to his horrific crime due to his guilt-ridden heart. His heart is empty, except for the evil that exists inside which ultimately destroys him. The narrator insists that it his duty to kill the man with the evil eye because he can no longer bear to observe the horrifying sight. He has become obsessed with the eye and when he conceives his ultimate plan he says it haunted me day and night (1206). Looking At Ibn Sina Avicenna A Muslim Scientist Religion Essay
Looking At Ibn Sina Avicenna A Muslim Scientist Religion Essay Ibn Sina, also known as Avicenna in western world, is a persian and a muslim scientist, scholar, theologian, matematician, poet, physician and a philosopher who was born in 980 C.E. in a village named Afsana near Buhara. He is also known to be a genius who displayed a great intellectial potential in his first years of education and had the chance to be educated by his father, who was a clerk for the royal palace and some of other persian teachers for the royal family. At the age of ten he was known to memorize the Quran and was proficient in arithmetics.During the next years he studied fiqh(islamic jurisprudence),linguistics, logic, euclidian geometry, philopsopy and The Almagest. He is said to be interested in and troubled with Aristotelean philosophy and metaphysics and overcame the troubles with the help of the book al-Ibane by another Persian philosopher Alpharabius and greatly influenced by him. After his fathers death, he left Buhara and went to get in the service of Qabus, ruler of Jurjan who was famous with his interest to education and taught logic and astronomy, also contined on writing Canon there. After the murder of the Qabus he continued on travelling around firstly going to Ray,a place near Teharan now, and then Hamada to cure the Amir Shamsud-Dawala to cure his colic and rewarded as being a prime minister for such a service. Avicennas days in Hamada went on busy and divided into two different jobs, being a prime minister and a scholar who gathered his students and taught medicine using his already finished two books Canon and newest one Kitab al-Shifa(means healing power in persian, also known as The Book of Healing in western civilizations). Those days ended after Amirs death. He hid himself in an apothecary and continued on his workd and teaching. At the same time Hamada was in war with Isfahan which was a city meaning more free environment and peace for Avicanna,so he secretly send letters to the important people of Isfahan, offering his services. The new Amir of Hamada got aware of this situation and Avicennas hiding place and put him into imprisonment. In time,Isfahan managed to capture Hamada and towns around it,after the war was over Avicenna returned to Hamada with Amir and continued on his studies for some time. One night,he escaped the city with his brother,a pupil and two slaves and went to Isfahan to be welcomed warmly by the Prince of Isfahan . Until his death,he remained in the service of the prince of Isfahan and offered his services to the Ala-al Daula the prince of Isfahan as his personal physician, literary and scientific adviser who accompanied him everywhere, including the military campaigns. As he was a chronic colic sufferer he lived his last years under great pain and refused to live moderately and allow himself to relax. He continued to accompany prince on his campaings and these were the places where made the Avicennas illness got stronger. He is said to be told that I prefer a short life with width to a narrow one with length. Although one of the most famous quotes from him is The world is divided into men who have wit and no religion and men who have religion and no wit. And he did not practiced the islamic duties for his religion publicly, he gave away his belongings to the poor, freed his slaves and read Quran at his last times of life.He died in june 1037 at the age of 58 and buried in Hamadan,Iran. His mausoleum is still could be visited in Hamadan. According to Al-Qifti,Avicenna wrote 21 major an 24 minor works on philosophy, medicine, theology, astronomy and the like. Eight of the sixteen medical texts are written in versifed treatises for example,25 signs indicating fatal termination of ilnesses, hygienic precepts, proved remedies etc. Apart from them,Canon is the largest, most widely known and one of the most important works of Avicenna which also led him to be known in western civilizations as well.It contains 14 volumes and more than one million words and unites Galens and Hippocrates with some serious addition which are Avicennas researches and his own experiences.Whole book is split into five different books addressing to five different categories and these are first part is the general principles, second part is the basic drugs in alphebetical order with the information of where and when to use, possible effects on patients, third part is the members of body and diseases of the particular organs, fourth part is the diseases which are local but affecting the entire body, fifth part is the using drugs together to create a more effective treatment. Canon said to have more than 450 remedies which were noted carefully with effects, possible side effects and how to apply them to treat diseases successfully. He also noted interesting things in Canon such as advising surgeons to treat cancer in earlier stages, being sure that theyve taken out all the ill part of the organ, testing new remedies on animals before the humans and noted the effect of emotions on physical condition.Interestingly enough he even diagnosed love sickness and the treatment for this disease was to make the suffered one get together with the loved one. The Arabic version of Canon published in Rome in 1593,being one of the earliest arabic books to be printed. In the 12th century it was translated into Latin by Gerard of Cremonia and served as a chief guide to the medical science ,displacing the work of Galen and being the medical bible till the 1600s.It is also said to be influenced Leonardo Da Vinci in his researches. In Book of Healing also called The Cure, despite the english name he didnt write on medicine but wrote about curing the ignorance of the soul. The book is split to four parts; first part is logic, second part is natural sciences, third part is mathematics and the fifth part is metaphysics. He wrote about his knowledge on astronomy, chemistry, earth sciences, psychology, logic, metaphysics and the philosophy of science. The information in the book was mainly influenced by the teachings of ancient greek philosophers, hellenistic thinkers and some earlier muslim and persian scientists and philosophers. Although Avicenna is a big name of medical history and sometimes addressed as doctor of the doctors,he is not widely known as he should be. He had to travel around a lot to have himself secure and be able to study on his desired area of practices but he was a genius, who studied in many different disciplines including medicine, theology, philosophy, logic, geometry, mathematics, alchemy and created his most valuable work in medicine. He wrote Canon ,Book of Healing and many other books on various topics such as philosophy.
